Grade Calculator

Work out your weighted class grade from category scores, or find the score you need on the final exam.

Your Grades

Leave any row's weight at 0 to ignore it. Weights don't need to add up to exactly 100 - the calculator scales them automatically.

How This Grade Calculator Works

This tool covers the two questions people most often have about a class grade: what your overall grade is once each category is weighted correctly, and what score you need on a remaining final exam to land on a target grade.

Weighted grade vs. simple average

A simple average treats every score the same. A weighted grade does not - homework might count for 20% of your grade while the final counts for 40%, so a low homework score hurts less than a low final exam score. Enter each category's score and its weight, and the calculator does the weighted math for you.

Why weights don't need to add up to 100

If your weights sum to something other than 100 - say you only have 90% of the syllabus entered so far - the calculator scales the result proportionally using only the categories you filled in (any row left at 0% weight is ignored). This keeps the percentage accurate even with a partial category list.

Figuring out what you need on the final

Switch to "what do I need on the final" mode and enter your current grade (your average across everything except the final), how much the final is worth, and the overall grade you're aiming for. The calculator works backward to the exact score the final needs to bring your overall grade up to target.

A worked example

Homework 85% (20%), quizzes 92% (20%), midterm 78% (20%) and a final exam of 88% (40%) works out to a weighted overall grade of 86.2% - a B. Separately, someone sitting at 82% going into a final worth 25% of the grade needs a 94% on that final to reach an overall 85%.

Frequently asked questions

What letter grade scale does this use?

The standard US 10-point scale: 90% and up is an A, 80-89% a B, 70-79% a C, 60-69% a D, and below 60% an F. Some schools use a different scale (plus/minus grades, a curve, or a different cutoff) - check your syllabus if your school grades differently.

What if I don't know all my category weights yet?

Leave any row you don't have information for at 0% weight - the calculator ignores rows with 0% weight and scales the remaining weights automatically, so the percentage stays accurate for whatever you've entered so far.

Can I add more than 5 categories?

Combine categories that share a weight - for example, if you have eight homework grades that are each worth the same amount, average them yourself first and enter that average as one "Homework" row with the combined weight.

What does it mean if the score needed on the final is over 100%?

It means the target isn't reachable with the weights as entered - even a perfect 100% on the final would not bring the overall grade up to your target. You'd need a higher score on earlier work or a lower target.

What if the score needed is 0% or negative?

That means you've already secured the target grade regardless of the final - any score, including a 0%, still leaves your overall grade at or above the target.

Is "current grade so far" the same as my grade on everything I've turned in?

Yes - it should be your weighted average across every category except the final exam itself. If you're not sure what that number is, switch to "weighted grade" mode first, enter everything except the final with weight 0 on the final row, and use that result as your current grade.

Does this work for pass/fail or non-percentage grading?

No - this calculator assumes every category is scored on a 0-100% scale. Convert points-based scores to a percentage first (points earned divided by points possible) before entering them.

Is this the same as a GPA calculator?

No - this finds the grade for one class from its internal categories. For combining multiple finished courses into a semester GPA, use the GPA Calculator instead.
