This tool answers the three questions students ask most about a class grade. The first is what your overall grade is once every category is weighted correctly. The second is what score you need on the final exam, or on any work still to come, to reach a target grade. The third is what percentage you have when a class is graded by total points. Choose the calculation type at the top of the tool, fill in the fields, and the result updates as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere, and you can use it as often as you like.
A simple average treats every score the same. A weighted grade does not. If homework counts for 20% of the course and the final counts for 40%, then a low homework score hurts far less than a low final. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight, adds the results, and divides by the total weight. If your weights add up to something other than 100, for example because only part of the syllabus is listed, the calculator scales them automatically, so the percentage stays accurate.
Suppose homework is worth 20% and you have 85%, quizzes are worth 20% and you have 92%, the midterm is worth 20% and you scored 78%, and the final is worth 40% and you scored 88%. The weighted total is (85 x 20 + 92 x 20 + 78 x 20 + 88 x 40) / 100 = 86.2%, which is a B on the standard scale. A plain average of the four scores would be 85.75%, and it would give the final exam the same influence as the homework, which is wrong here.
Leave the score blank for anything not yet graded, and enter a target. Take the same class before the final. Homework 85%, quizzes 92% and the midterm 78% add up to 5,100 weighted points across 60% of the grade, which is a current grade of 85.0%. To finish with 90% overall, you need (90 x 100 - 5,100) / 40 = 97.5% on the final. For an 85% you need 85.0%, and for an 80% you need 72.5%. The calculator does this in one step and tells you when a target is out of reach.
If you already know your current grade, the second mode is faster. Enter your grade on everything except the final, the weight of the final, and your target. The formula is (target - current x (1 - weight)) / weight. With 82% going into a final worth 25%, a target of 85% requires (85 - 82 x 0.75) / 0.25 = 94%. The results also show what you would need for each letter grade. In that example an A (90%) would require 114%, which is not possible, a B requires 74%, a C requires 34%, and a D is already secured, because even a zero on the final leaves you at 61.5%.
Some classes skip percentages and weights and simply add up points. Choose the total points mode, then enter what you earned and what was possible for each assignment. If you scored 18 of 20, 45 of 50, 27 of 30 and 8 of 10, that is 98 of 110 points, or 89.09%. On a whole-letter scale, that is a B, and on the plus and minus scale it is a B+. The calculator also shows how many more points you would have needed for the next letter grade, which in this case is just 1 point to reach 90%, an A on the whole-letter scale or an A- with plus and minus.
The default is the common US 10-point scale: 90% and above is an A, 80 to 89.9% a B, 70 to 79.9% a C, 60 to 69.9% a D, and below 60% an F. With plus and minus grades, the usual cutoffs are A+ at 97%, A at 93%, A- at 90%, B+ at 87%, B at 83%, B- at 80%, C+ at 77%, C at 73%, C- at 70%, D+ at 67%, D at 63% and D- at 60%. The letter is based on the percentage rounded to one decimal place, so a result of 89.96% shows as 90.0% and counts as an A. Your syllabus is the final authority, because schools and instructors set their own cutoffs and rounding rules.

What letter grade scale does this use?
By default the standard US 10-point scale, where 90% and up is an A, 80 to 89% a B, 70 to 79% a C, 60 to 69% a D, and below 60% an F. You can switch to a plus and minus version. Some schools use a different scale or a curve, so check your syllabus if your school grades differently.
What if I do not know all my category weights yet?
Leave any row you have no information for at 0% weight. The calculator ignores it and scales the remaining weights automatically, so the percentage is accurate for whatever you have entered so far.
Can I add more than four categories?
Yes. Use the add button to create more rows, up to 12 categories. You can also combine categories that share a weight, such as several homework grades, by averaging them first.
What does it mean if the score needed on the final is over 100%?
It means the target is out of reach with the weights as entered, since even a perfect final would not lift your overall grade high enough. You would need extra credit, a lower target, or a higher score on earlier work.
What if the score needed is 0% or negative?
Then you have already secured the target. Any score, even a zero, leaves your overall grade at or above it.
Is "current grade so far" the same as my grade on everything I have turned in?
Yes, it should be your weighted average of every category except the final exam. If you are unsure of it, use the weighted mode, fill in everything you have, and leave the final's score blank. The "grade so far" result is your current grade.
How do I calculate a grade when the class uses total points?
Choose the total points mode and enter each assignment's earned and possible points. The calculator adds them up and divides earned by possible. Note that in a points system a larger assignment automatically counts for more, since it has more points.
Is this the same as a GPA calculator?
