The unit converter changes everything into a single base unit first, then into the unit you picked. To go from miles to kilometers, for example, it converts miles to meters and then meters to kilometers. Every factor is a fixed standard value, so the results are exact rather than estimated. Length uses meters as the base, weight uses kilograms, and volume uses liters. Temperature is handled separately with formulas, because scales like Celsius and Fahrenheit differ by both size and starting point.
The currency converter works differently. When the page loads, it fetches current exchange rates from a public rates service and applies them to your amount. If the request fails, for example when you have no internet connection, it falls back to approximate reference rates for the original set of currencies and flags the result as an estimate. Newer currencies show "Unavailable offline" instead of a guess.

Currency works the same way through a common reference. Suppose, as an illustration, that 1 US dollar buys 0.92 euros. Then 250 USD converts to 250 × 0.92 = 230 EUR. For two currencies that are not the dollar, the tool divides by the first rate to get dollars and multiplies by the second. With illustrative rates of 0.90 euros and 0.75 pounds per dollar, 100 EUR becomes 100 ÷ 0.90 = 111.11 USD, then × 0.75 = 83.33 GBP. These numbers are examples only. The live rate appears in the result panel every time you convert.
Many unit names mean different amounts depending on the country. This tool uses US customary values for gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces. A UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, larger than the US gallon at 3.785 liters, and a UK pint is about 568 milliliters compared with roughly 473 milliliters in the US. Australian and New Zealand recipes often use a metric cup of 250 milliliters, slightly larger than the US cup.
The same caution applies to weight. The "Metric tons" option is 1,000 kilograms. A US short ton is 2,000 pounds (about 907 kilograms) and a UK long ton is 2,240 pounds (about 1,016 kilograms), so a bare "ton" in a document can mean three different things.
The rates in this tool are reference rates, similar to the mid-market rate you see on financial news sites. Banks, card networks, and money transfer services usually add a margin or a fee, so the amount you actually receive is normally a little lower than the converted figure. Use the result to compare prices, budget a trip, or check an invoice, and confirm the final amount with your provider before you send or spend money.
The rate provider publishes new figures once a day. The "Rates last updated" line tells you exactly when the current set was published, so you always know how fresh the number is.

Which temperature scales are supported?
Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Fahrenheit is mainly used in the United States, Celsius in most other countries, and Kelvin in science.
What's the formula for converting between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin?
Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9/5, then add 32 (0 °C = 32 °F). Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. Celsius to Kelvin: just add 273.15, since a Kelvin degree is the same size as a Celsius degree and only the zero point moves.
Why might the exchange rate change if I check again later?
The provider updates its rates once a day, so refreshing the page within the same day shows the same rate. The figure changes when the next daily update is published. Real currency markets move all day, so a rate quoted live by a bank or trading platform can differ slightly from the daily reference rate shown here.
Can I convert cooking measurements like cups or tablespoons?
Cups and fluid ounces are supported under the Volume category. Tablespoons and teaspoons aren't included yet, since they are less standardized across countries than cups, liters, or fluid ounces.
Are the gallons, pints, and cups US or imperial?
They are US customary units. A US gallon is 3.785 liters, while a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, so results will differ from an imperial recipe or fuel figure. For a metric cup of 250 milliliters, convert to milliliters instead of using the cup option.
Why doesn't the rate match what my bank or Google shows?
This tool shows a daily reference rate. Banks and payment providers add a margin or fee on top of the market rate, and live quotes update many times a day. A small gap is normal. For the exact amount you will receive, check the rate your provider quotes at the moment of the transaction.
How precise are the unit conversions?
Results show up to six decimal places, and very small results show enough digits to stay meaningful, so 1 millimeter converts to 0.000000621371 miles instead of rounding to zero. The conversion factors themselves are standard exact values, such as 2.54 centimeters per inch.
